2004 Carlos Prieto Ibero American
Cello Competition Results

The Fourth Carlos Prieto Ibero American Competition was held at the Las Rosas Conservatory, in Morelia, Mexico, from November 15 to the 20th. It was organized by the Conservatory with the support of the National Council for Culture and Arts of Mexico (CONACULTA) and the Government of the State of Michoacán.

The winners of the competition were:
1st prize: Dmitri Atapin, from Spain
2nd prize: Christian Jimenez, from Venezuela
3rd prize: Horacio Contreras, from Venezuela
Special mention: José G. Nieto
Dmitri Atapin received a US $5000 check plus an invitation to play at the Morelia International Music Festival in 2005, record a CD, and play with orchestras of Mexico, Latin America and Spain.

As of 2006, the competition will become an International Competition, open to young cellists from all over the world, with Latin American music being an important part of the repertoire.
